Andy Reid stuns Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs fans by pulling off remarkable baseball feat in Kansas City Royals’ season opener
The three-time Super Bowl MVP took to social media to issue a serious question about his head coach.
“Anyone know if coach Reid threw a strike?” Mahomes tweeted, adding three laughing/crying emojis for good measure and tagging the Royals.
It was Kansas City’s first game of the 2024 baseball season, and the face of the NFL wanted to know if his 66-year-old coach could get the ball over the plate.
Less than two months ago, Mahomes and Reid teamed up in Las Vegas to overcome the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
Mahomes threw the game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds of overtime, while Reid cemented his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
But even Mahomes was curious whether his coach could go ahead 0-1 in the count as the Royals played the first contest of a 162-game campaign.
“A baseball in his right hand, the Lombardi Trophy in his left,” an announcer said, as Reid made his way toward the mound and was surrounded by Kansas City mascots.
Then the three-time Super Bowl champ reared back and smoothly delivered a pitch that left social media stunned.
“Oh, yeah, that’s a strike!” an announcer said, which was followed by Reid proudly pumping his fist.
“He knew what he was doing,” a third fan wrote.
Reid blew away NFL and MLB fans with his smooth strike.
He had to have impressed Mahomes, who could have played baseball if not choosing football as his career path.
Mahomes threw a brilliant no-hitter and struck out 16 batters in a high school baseball game.
Mahomes’ father, Pat, also played in MLB for 11 years as a pitcher.
Pat’s son was so talented on the diamond that he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, despite barely playing the sport at Texas Tech.
Reid did his part on Thursday by firing a strike.
The Royals missed, though, falling 4-1 to the Minnesota Twins to start 0-1 in 2024.
The good news for Kansas City is there are still 161 games to go.
They can always call Reid out of the bullpen if they need pitching help.
In other news, Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and will call Mahomes his new teammate.
